Our troops are being exhausted and extended beyond their contracted obligations. If you support the war, and our troops, do you support a draft?

I may not be a good person to answer this, since I was subject to the draft (I'm 58), but yes I would support a draft. Our national guard troops were not expected to spend multiple tours of duty in Iraq--and they have. The tours of duty for our enlisted soldiers have been extended. Enlistments are down and we are lacking protection at home. When Katrina hit, the La. National Guard was in Iraq. This will not be a popular answer among the younger Americans and I did not choose this response lightly. A fair and equitable draft for men and women should be seriously considered. Do we have enough troops to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq without jeopardizing our protection at home? What if another war breaks out with Iran? How can we even spare the National Guard to protect our borders? I'd be happy if you can convince me there's a better solution, but I can't find one at this time.

I support doing whatever it takes to clean up the mess in Iraq while keeping as many safe as possible... I think the men in women in or military are being taxed heavily doing multiple tours in the desert, and its even harder on their families. I think a draft would cause National outrage though, and it might give an even stronger look of defeat.... this is perhaps why the president has strayed away from a draft! But really i don't think the amount of troops we send to Iraq is going to make much of a difference unless we find a way to double the amount there, and that would only be possible with a draft!!! so i say either a new strategy or a draft!

I support the Iraq War.

I do not support a draft. A draft would destroy the professionalism and motivation of our current highly-trained and motivated volunteer force. Only Democrats want a draft - because they WANT to destroy our troops.

They are neither exhausted, nor extended beyond their contract limitations. More liberal talking points and lies.

Talk to the troops. Check out the videos I've attached links to and learn something beyond the swill your terrorist enabling leadership is shoving down your throat.

And to cut off your next comment - I did volunteer. I'm 42 years old and I ship for Basic Training in the US Army in just about 6 months.

EDIT: Hamthug - what have you got against Will? ;-) :-P

making the decision to go to war is not easy. It is the most difficult decision a leader can make. After all it is the lives of your own citizens you are sending out. However, when you think of it, why have a military or join a military and think you will never have to fight. The problem now is the war has been going on and regardless whether we or people support the war or not does not matter. Support needs to be given to the men and women who are over there fighting. Freedom comes at a high cost. I ask if those who do not support the war or our troops would rather instead of fighting we lay down or arms and let the enemy run us over.

I have heard Democrats raising the idea of a draft, which is strange.
However, I do support our troops. I feel that this question should be directed to them. Do they want someone over there against their will watching their backs ?

We have enough troops. And for people complaining about the war do to their ingnorance this is what it is about.
Saddam Hussein was known to kill Iraqi's similar to what Hitler did with the Holocaust. Now that he is gone we still have to ensure Iraqi safety. There is currently a war going on between the Sunni's and Shiites. If the shiites get power another Saddam Hussein can rise up so it will be illogical to remove all troops. I think a draft should only be used in a situation to defend our own land.

I support our troops, etc but I don't support a draft. It should be a person's choice to put their life on the line. The soldiers are noble and brave for serving their country and putting their life on the line. I don't feel it should be a forced thing. I thank the soldiers for that freedom for I am not brave enough to serve.

I support our troops. I do not support the war. My husband is in Iraq right now- I feel like its a waste of man power and it spreads the US military too thin. The draft would be horrible bc the disent would be overwhelming and who wants to be in a military with people who dont want to be there. The USA is based on a principle of freedom. people choose to protect these principles, we cant force people to protect freedom.

A draft would be a mistake of unbelievable proportions. The disciplinary problems alone would not make it worthwhile.

You think we have problems with people going AWOL now? Imagine what it would be like with a draft!

Commanders would have their plates full just handing out non-judicial punishments for various breaches of military conduct.

It is better to have those who choose to serve their country, rather than those who are forced against their will.
