No, not in most states. You generally have to file the same way.

It depends on the state. Many states, but not all, require that you file with the same status for state as you did for federal.

Some states allow it, some don't. It's up to the laws of the individual states. I know from experience that VA does allow it, and even requires it in certain cases.
