Under the provisions of NAFTA, Canadian citizens with degrees (B.S. or provincial licnese) qualify for TN visas into the US. TN visa is valid for 1 year and must be renewed every year thereafter. There is no petition necessary, but you will need to present all your credentials as well as documentation of a job offer from a US employer.
Otherwise, a person can be sponsored as an H1B by an employer in the US. This type of visa is valid for a period of up to 3 years and can be renewed for another 3 thereafter.
Students can work in the US with an OPT, however, they must be a full-time student for 1 year prior to applying for OPT. The most that a person can work with OPT is 20 hours a week.
A "green card" is technically an Immigrant visa, whereas all of the others listed above are temporary, non-immigrant visas. With a "green card," you are legally able to work for any employer in the United States.

I know there are several levels of work visas available. Go to the US Homeland Security site for an explanation of each. There are student ones, H2B - which the US employer has to do, a longer one for up to three years, I think. The student one is hard to get (lots of paperwork) and expensive. The others rely on the employer not being able to fill the job locally...

They'll need a "green card". Have the person in question contact the nearest American consulate for details.
