My grandfather was a gardener for the royal estates all of his working life.
When he died last year, my grandmother payed £400 for a hybrid rose to be created and named after him. It is a cross between about three or four other roses. Its is called the 'Johnathon Hodge rememberance'. If you could name a rose after someone special for a special reason, who and why?

My mother. Because she was my inspiration, my rock and my friend. She was also a fantastic rose gardener!

At the end of every growing season she would, what I used to call, 'murder' her roses by hacking them back to within an inch of the stalk. Her rapid use of secateurs would put Edward Scissorhands to shame!

Each summer, the roses would have grown back with a vengeance and the garden (indeed the street!) would be bathed in the fragrance of her labours.

Names such as 'Josephine Bruce', 'Ena Harkness', 'Blue Moon', 'Superstar' and 'Peace' evoke memories of a childhood helping tend bushes of flowers that used to 'bite me' if I mishandled them (the thorns!).

Mom died too young (at 59) and I carefully selected some stems from her favourite home-grown roses, hand-tied them into a bouquet which went with her into the ground.

To this day, I cannot pass a rose without taking in it's heady scent and remembering those flashing secateurs!

What a great thing to do. I think at this moment in time I would like a rose named after my Gran. Elizabeth Watt. She is 92 this year and a fantastic women. She has no outside help and still cooks and bakes for herself and us.
She was widowed in the late 40's and left with 5 children on her own. She never re-married. She has 7 grand-children and 11 great-grandchildren. She is so open minded for a women of her years and at 39 years of age I can talk to her about anything. She never judges, just listens. I don't remember a time in my life when she has never been there for me and it is so hard not to be near her now as I have moved away, (15 years now) but I see her every-time I go home and make sure my children have time with her.
She always says, don't worry about making time for me when you come home, you have your friends to catch up with.....
