There's countless posts on here from people with depression, sometimes at the end of their rope (literally). If you've ever answered any of them, or have known someone in your life with depression, what have you found to be the best way to help them through, and what words have proven to be most encouraging?

They need to know you understand what they are going through. Alot of times just being there for them and being a good listener helps a great deal. I suffered from depression before, but with my friends understanding and counseling I was able to beat it.

having a really good friend that accepts your feeling down, gives you the space you want when you need it and shares some good times with you. best therapy is often gettin away fromk it all and going on holiday to the sun with a friend. you will forget all your worries, get some good sunshine (sunshine is proven to help with depression). a distraction from your worries often helps, gardening very, very is good. stay away from pills and alcohol too, it makes things worse, laughing is also very good, not just normal laughter but that belly-aching side splitting laughter that gives you tears in the eyes, and plenty of it.
