I say something very nice to them. Not sarcastically, I will sincerely say something like "I like your dress" or "Merry Christmas" or even "I love you" when somebody is being a jerk. It usually gets them to stop and they feel like a real heel, without my having had to call them anything. And if anybody is around to see it, you'll end up looking like a much classier person, and the person who was being rude will look that much worse.
Comebacks don't work well, they only escalate the situation.

I usually come up with good comebacks long after the insult is made. They are pretty good, I might add (at least in my fantasies, they are!)
However, one time a coworker made a crack about my height. (I am 4'10"). She made the same comment over and over. I was getting tired of it. So, I finally said " I don't need to make fun of other people in order to make myself feel important." (or something like that).
She wasn't aware that here comments were annoying. She apologized and stopped making the comment.
Probably the best response is to laugh and say "Well, if that's the best you can do..." Or, turn it around. You could say "Well, the joke's on me, I guess. " Walk away.
If the comments are mean and insulting (and you are still in school), consider telling your parents or a trusted teacher. You are being bullied and that shouldn't be tolerated.

Guy I worked with treated me like I was stupid and made fun of my qualifications.
I worked hard and got promoted, and when we had a reorganization two years later, I became his boss.
I didn't have to say or do a thing to make him squirm. It was the sweetest revenge I ever had.

Why stoop to their level? Some people are just ugly inside and out and they have to let that ugly out once and a while. You don't have to have a comeback but I don't see anything wrong with pointing out their bad behavior.

One time I was getting a shooter at the bar when a man looked me up and down, sideways and shudder. Made some side comment about my weight. Well, I ignored, got the shooter and turned to my friend. This shooter requires instructions to drink correctly *wink* and in intimate detail I described how to properly drink this drink. Then, when I was done and she had her shooters, we started to walk away. I turned and said "honey you don't know what you are missing." According to my friends his mouth completely dropped, he was pratically drooling and started to follow me. They were laughing so hard when I got to the table. He was still standing there stunned. Yup, sarcasm, works everytime. ;)

I was in 8th grade playing basketball a person whom I didn't much care for proceeded to start making fun of my last name, something I'd gotten used to by that point in my life but I decided that it was time to stop. I proceeded to choke this person until they passed out, needless to say I went way to far but I was young and angry. This person and everyone else at my school and high school never made fun of my last name again.

Anonymously annoy her to no end! Create a new e-mail account with her name on yahoo or something and send it to her real e-mail address all day with random messages. You could include how snotty she is, some diet plans, that may straighten her out a bit!
If not, it will drive her crazy having e-mails coming in to her from herself!

Keep smiling and tell them to have a good day! It really upsets people when they see that they can't get under your skin because that's where a lot of people get their kicks so by telling them to have a good day and by smiling it shows them that they can't get the best of you.

My husband was grilling me once about where I'd been. I got annoyed and asked if he was writing a book or something. He thought he was being funny and said: "What if I AM"? To which I replied: "Then kiss my *** and make it a love story!!!"
