Everyone knows that it is the Pagans that have the best parties. Thus, Mardi Gras must be Pagan!

Seriously though, there are some Christian groups who believe that just about everything is Pagan. Some believe that Catholics are Pagans, some feel that dancing is a Pagan activity, some see any sort of costume wearing as Pagan (Halloween-ish I guess), and so forth. Additionally, the most famous Mardi Gras celebration here is in New Orleans, which has a rather sizeable Vodou community.

One other thing to consider is that the organizational teams involved in Mardi Gras in New Orleans go by names such as Orpheus and Bacchus, as well as other Pagan names.

Additionally, due to the origin of Mardi Gras in the U.S. involving the wheeling of a giant constructed bull through town, there are a few who claim that the whole celebration is based on idolatry. I have only heard this claim once or twice though, so I do not believe this to be a commonly held belief, even among far right Protestant groups.

Lent is a Catholic holiday of fasting.

Fat Tuesday is the storm before the calm, so to speak, a last chance "endulge".

Mardi Gras is several weeks long, filled with non-Christian traditions. I don't call them Pagan, but they're certainly not Christian.

What do you think? The reason we have the day is to celebrate before Lent comes and you have to give up something that you do, hopefully something sinful. So, it is designed from the outstart to be a celebration of sinful activity so that we can then be "good" and give up said sins during Lent.

Those sad souls think everything fun is pagan. That and they are sadly alienated from the history of their own church.
