Ignorance. The church wants to be involved as a power player. The people who follow it are just plain dumb from the brainwashing.

You are not looking at this deep enough. The foundation of the decisions made behind these issues aren't religious-based. They are based on morals. I'll use your examples to explain:
*The abortion issue is a battle of morality because it takes the life of the unborn child into consideration. THe deeper question is "does that child have a right to be born?" when that question is posed, it turns into a question of who is to have a final say-so over who lives or dies. Now this is a moral factor.
*The Gay marriage is deep as well, because many pose the question "How does one become gay?" many think it is a decision and many think individuals are born with a gene that determines them to be gay. The issue then becomes, "How will this effect the lives of others."
Your view of religion is general because RELIGION is your spritual practice. Buddism, Hinduism, Baptist, Catholics, even Satanist are religions but counter-act each other. I think you are speaking moreso on spirituality. If that is the case, then yes, politics and spirituality are indeed mixed because your spirituality provides you with the morals you will live by. These matters which you brought up are indeed a question of morality. Whenever you talk about politics, you are talking about a wide-range of people. People have their own morals because of their spiritual-views. Their spiritual views are based on the religions they practice so it's easy slip up and see politics and religions being mixed.

It is kind of sad when you think about it. The last thing we need in free nations is the mix of religion and politics. The reason the conservative movement ties religion to their cause because it works almost the same as hatred did for Hitler. It causes people to sway right when actually they are more in the middle because they don't want to go to hell for supporting homosexuals or abortion. In reality they are not supporting either but an unjust cause to go to war with who ever doesn't agree with our leader.

for the comparable reason feminists and gay rights activists insist on mixing intercourse and politics: by using fact the non-public is political. That stated, undesirable faith produces undesirable politics. I dislike Stephen Harper as much as everybody, yet i'm no longer particularly confident the place you're going with something of your question. looks like something of a non sequitur.

Unfortunately, one of the key characteristics of the religious is that their religion ranks above all else, including their responsibilities to other humans, hence making their worldview very ego-centric.
It becomes difficult for the religious to differentiate between their religious life and real life at some point. It is the duty of the non-religious to counter this trend as this abrogates our rights.

I have not, will not and never have gotten my Religion mixed up with politics. Very few members of my parish know where I stand on any political issue, because it's not important.

Dont generalize... Not all the people is like that.
And the people that is that way, is because they are ruled by what they call Sacred books. For example.........abortion.. Conservative people can hurt another people only because support and accept the abortion. They are fanatics . They want everyone thinks like them. and they call themselves christians !!!! lol.......But, I have to say that among another religions the same happen..So...for me, the best is to respect them without share their thoughts, and for us let's try to live according with our own beliefs without offend anyone.
Not always is easy to get that.

Because they are both very passionate subjects for many people! People who are passionate (or obsessed, whichever way you choose to look at it), like our current president, see that they have the power to make others abide by their beliefs, because they think that it is the only way to go. Closemindedness! I agree that all topics that you listed above should be the CHOICE of the individual.

It's a distraction from things that really matter. The religious right is nothing but a tool in modern American politics.
