I have real player and windows media player Neither will start playing dvd when I put a dvd in dvd player?

Neither WMP or Real can play by default DVDs due to some licensing restrictions. You need to have a Windows Media OS or buy/download a DVD player first. Then WMP can play DVds as well.

However, are you sure you have a DVD drive? Usually, when you get a DVD drive you also get a free player (Intervideo or something similar)

Your not missing anything. Simply right click on the D: drive (or CD drive if other) and click on autoplay choose if you want to be asked for every CD that is inserted or if it recognized audio or video files to play it automatically in what program.
