Playing the devils advocate is "pretending" to be in favor of a particular argument, in order to fuel debate and discussion, and to see how well your opponent argues the opposite position (of which you are really in favor) It also gives you an opportunity to understand an issue from the other mans perspective, and see if you can find reasons to agree.

Proposing a worst case scenario when something is being planned.

You've planned a big project and the only thing that can mess it up is a big snow storm. But it's the middle of the summer.

Someone playing the devil's advocate might say - "you know, it's snowed in summer before - how would we handle that"....

It means to take the opposite view for argument's sake. It comes from the idea that the Devil is God's aide in bringing people the light.

Merely taking the opposing viewpoint in a debate, telling people what they need to hear and consider before deciding an issue. Most of us don't like this, so it is deemed "bad"=Devil.

Christian bashing,blaspheming against the Holy Ghost,Rebeling against God and anything else that they do to provoke Christians into an arguement with them just for the sake of arguing.
