I just bought a new Gateway with Vista preloaded on it. I really don't like Vista and I want to install XP instead.

Would it be possible to install XP and then later in a year or so, put Vista back on?

And what do I need to do before/after switching?
Thanks!

You can do this, but you need to make sure you have a legit XP install CD and key (and make sure it's SP2), and you'll have to reformat your hard drive. This means you'll lose all applications that came installed on your computer as well as all data. It may also present problems with getting warranty support through Gateway, if that's an issue.

But you'd need to boot off the XP CD and go into the repair console. Do fdisk /mbr and format c: and then reboot and install XP. You'll need to reinstall any applications that you have discs for. Oh, make sure you have XP drivers for all your hardware before you start. But it should be pretty easy. And once you have it installed, connect to Microsoft Update to patch it. There have been a lot of security patches released since SP2.

You may have a problem reinstalling because Vista was "bundled" with your computer. See if you can download and pay for the program on a CD. When ready for Vista, you will have to reinstall on the same computer because when you activated it, the product key and information about your computer were merged to create a unique ID.

If you are successful, you can format your hard drive and install WinXP. You will have to purchase XP.

You are very wise.
You should read this article from Forbes Magazine about Vista and why no one with any technical knowledge or understanding of the operating system will upgrade to it.

All you need is a XP installation CD and a valid license.
