What extra work is involved, compared to having a chassis from the same year ?

yes they will interchange , but with a Beetle pan of that vintage there will be some collector looking for it.

All pre-67 pans will interchange with one another but for instance putting a 54' body on a 57' pan will make it a 57' beetle by DMV standards which in many cases will reduce the value of a car around that year model. The car would have to be registered to what ever year pan thats on it. Ive even seen a real 57' oval body on a 68' beetle pan, registered as a 68'. I know......dumb hugh. I would think that they are matched up pretty good. The bugs didn't change much until the mid 60's.
