In order for sound to exist, you have to have 3 things: A source, a medium to transfer the sound wave and a receiver.

If nobody is around, then even though soundwaves are produced, there is not a sound.

The generation of sound does not require the reception of that sound for it to be sound, so yes, the tree makes a sound, it's just that there's no one around at the time to hear it. The presence or absence of someone with an ear has nothing to do with whether sound waves are generated or not. A bigger question-- If a man says something in the woods and there's no woman around to hear it, is he still wrong?

Yes, though it is true vibrations need to be received in order to make a sound. That witch receives the sonic vibration does not need to be an ear. It could be a piece of dust (microscopic) on a different tree that is moved or dislodged by the sonic vibrations. Therefore just because no one heard it does not mean it did not effect the world. Thus it did and must make a sound!
