As my high school track coach used to say:
"If you're not throwing up at the end, you could have gone faster"

Of course, if you were a good miler, at this point, you wouldn't be asking this question. The one thing that I see in high school track that always needs a little guidence is when a runner jogs the first three laps and then sprints like a wild dog for the last 150 meters. If you're back in the pack and have a sprint like that left, you didn't work very hard for the first 3 and 1/2 laps.

the first time you can't. After a few you'll know if for instance you started too fast and slowed at the end or the opposite. What you want to do is to run at the same pace all the way that's the most efficient way

You will feel like falling over, a bit like puking (even if you havent eaten anything) and at the end as you kick, you are going significantly faster than the rest of your race and trying to increase your pace but your body wont be able to do it for long so you kind of yoyo between a very fast and a fast pace

I can usually tell when I am done running. if I am really tired I know I pushed myself hard but if I feel like I could run more then I did not. After that I think about where in my run could I longer my strides or run harder.
