The Social Security Administration is responsible for two major programs that provide benefits based on disability: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is based on prior work under Social Security, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Under SSI, payments are made on the basis of financial need.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is financed with Social Security taxes paid by workers, employers, and self-employed persons. To be eligible for a Social Security benefit, the worker must earn sufficient credits based on taxable work to be "insured" for Social Security purposes. Disability benefits are payable to blind or disabled workers, widow(er)s, or adults disabled since childhood, who are otherwise eligible. The amount of the monthly disability benefit is based on the Social Security earnings record of the insured worker.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a program financed through general revenues. SSI disability benefits are payable to adults or children who are disabled or blind, have limited income and resources, meet the living arrangement requirements, and are otherwise eligible. The monthly payment varies up to the maximum federal benefit rate, which may be supplemented by the State or decreased by countable income and resources. See http://www.socialsecurity.gov/notices/supplemental-security-income/text-benefits-ussi.htm for an explanation of SSI benefit payment rates.

SSI - Supplemental Security Income - is a disability payment for those who are income eligible and who have not earned enough quarters under Social Security to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance.- SSDI. SSI is administered by Social Security but is funded by the state human services programs. The monthly payments are usually fairly low. A person under SSI usually immediately qualifies for Medicaid also.
SSI is a benefits program.

SSDI - is an insurance program - everyone who has paid into Soc. Sec. also pays into this insurance program. When you have earned enough quarters to qualify you can file for SSDI IF you have a long term/permanent disabling condition. Monthly insurance payments under SSDI vary according to how many quarters you have paid into the Social Security Program, age, etc.

The benefits are for retirees and the disability can start at any age PROVIDED the disability is severe enough.

There is a ton of paperwork involved in this from Drs, therapists, teachers, etc and it has to be proven it is a permanent disability and you cannot work or can work in a diminished capacity (ie: can't make enough to survive)

It is also extremely difficult anymore to get disability--SSI automatically turns you down on the first try. Then, you have to get a lawyer to fight for you. Think in the terms of years unless you case is extra-ordinary in the diasability.

This is SSI. SSDI payments are based on the work that you have done in the past and the $ amount will be higher. But you still have to prove the disability with the same process described above.

The difference is that SSI is for people who've never worked enough to have benefits coming to them through social security disability. You can only get social security disability based on the time and income that you've accumulated. SSI is limited on what you can make.
