My dog, Judge, was adopted from the shelter back in October. He was overweight as his previous owner never walked him in the two months she had him. For a while he was losing weight gradually at a good pace. Now, however, he's become a lazy bum that sleeps on the couch most of the day, and I think he's getting some fat back. I am going to cut his food a little bit to what I used to feed him before I switched him, but I need help encouraging him to play a bit more and I need ideas for fun games to play with him. Any ideas? (He's three years old by the way, if that helps at all)

i let my doggy sniff and mouth a treat, and run away, my doggy always chases me, or tie a treat to a piece of string and tie it to a chair, (but not too high!) and she will jump for it! i hope, take her on walks and dont give her too much treats, if you think that she is laying down because she is getting sick, go to a vet.

The reason why he's lazy because he's at a old age in dog years he's 21 exactly. To get him to exersize more get him off of the furniture. Then get a ball that bounces and let him place with that so he can exersize from there. For walking take little treats with small as possible.Stick them in your pocket without your dog seeing them. Then take him out let him do his buisness bring him in then give in the treat NEVER give a dog more than 2 treats a day because they will gain pounds from it.Also you should get a regular leash not a choker but a regular leash that helps them use the bathroom more offen. And if you want to know what's the best dog food for oversized animals it's Iam's and moist because they are the healthest. And for stopping your dog from being lazy put plastic on you furniture and keep it on a while my dog hates plastic and she won't even go near it so it should help you welcome if you need more tips get the small iams book it tell you how to train your dog too.

I think you need to take him to the vet and have a good check up. It is not normal for a 3 year old beagle to be lazy bum. It sounds like he hasn't had a very good start on life. The vet can give you proper information on how much to feed him and how much excersice he should be getting. You don't want to overdo it till he gets down to his correct weight. Beagles are prone to getting bad elbows and maybe the weight is causing him some pain. I take my beagle to the woods everyday and let her go. the are natural hunters and she goes nuts with all the smells. I don't know where you are but maybe there is a place you can take him and let his nose get him going. There is a lot of beagles in shelters because people don't relize how much work they are. Good luck to you. and to your beagle.

If you have a bike, put Judge on a leash & make him run beside you on the bike.I would go on a short bike ride on the first time because he isn't used to it and all.Gradurly make the walks longer the more he gets more used to it.This is a much better walk because it's not really walking, it's running (unless you go slow)!I do this (even thoe my dog isn't overweight).
Another thing to do is to keep her outside more.Something to do outside is to play fetch or at least just throw some balls around.
Another thing to do is to not feed him table scrapes (that's one reason one of my dogs died and he was over weight even thoe we exercised him).
Once he does get back to normal weight, don't stop all the exercise, keep on doing it.Or else he'll get overweight again. You don't have to do it that much thoe, but still do it.
Hope this helps!

First, I would take him to the vet and make sure he isnt sick and does not have worms. If he is totally healthy and just lazy, walk the dog. How can he refuse? After the walk reward him with a treat. Or take him into the yard and play with a ball or something. If he is sleeping, and you let him, then you are being lazy too.

Go for a walk. Since he is lazy, and does not walk that often. the first time you go for a walk, make it a short one. then as time goes on, make the walk longer and longer, other than making him walk a long distance at once. that will get him in shape. also, after each walk, give him a treat. maybe you can take a treat, or whatever he likes to eat, and throw it outside, that might make him tempted to get the food. GOOD LUCK! =D

Play ball with him. Roll it on the floor and let him chase it. Increase the number of walks you take with him. No feeding from the table.
Calories do count; try to give him food that is moderate in calories. Let him drink more water, it not only flushes out his kidneys, but it's another good reason for him to go out.

My beagle, Harley, loves to play fetch and tug-o-war. His favorite toy to fetch is a tennis ball (he likes to catch it in the air after it bounces) he also has a squeaky ball that keeps him quite amused. I also walk him at least once daily. Another idea might be to put Judge on a high-quality weight loss food. I feed Science Diet...

Well maybe you should take him for a walk. If that isn't improving his weight and you still feel not good having him that heavy then maybe you should try throwing the ball with them. They get excited and want to run!He he.Or maybe if he is lazy and doesn't want to run then make the ball smell like food ill bet you he will go after it then!

Does he have any toys? Get him balls. And take him for walks. I would start off with about a 10 to 15 minute walk or when ever he gets tried. He looks realy cute int he picture
