The Eastern Euro heavyweight boxers are hungrier then ours right now, so they have more desire to excel. Over here the best athletes usually choose other sports because it's easier, but that should not take away anything from the Soviets, they all have good fundentals and they're tough bastards, I think as time goes by we will see champions from everywhere because the world is getting smaller through globalization. I know some of these guys grow up in tough economic situations and usually the best fighters are poor.

There were three European heavyweight boxing champions in 1985 the first one was a bloke called Steffen Tangstad who was norwegian he first became champion in 1984 but lost it in 1985 to Anders Eklund from sweden who relinqised it soon after. The third one to hold that title in that year was Frank Bruno who won the vacant title later in that year.

The first European to become heavyweight champion was Max Schemeling of Germany in 1930 when he defeated Jack Sharkey by 4th round DQ due to a foul. Max was also the first man to defeat the mighty Joe Louis in 1936.
