It's one of the first things you should demonstrate to your children. But I think that you should also show your children the way you face an obvious adversity.
In other words, let your child know which situations are not appropriate for compassion.
When I was a small child my mom was mugged in a store. Although of course it wasn't in my best interest to jump the mugger, I didn't bat an eyelid, and when my mom fell down crying, I didn't understand why.
She was afraid to startle me, so I didn't understand what happened until months afterwards. It's a tough call to make, as to what aspects of society your child needs to be introduced at what age. But I would suggest the advice of a professional or a pediatrician to help you make that decision.
The way things are today... Children are being introduced to 'judge' their surrounding at an earlier and earlier age, so again, talk to someone with answers you can trust.

Absolutely, there are a number of important things that parents should be focusing on, but compassion is essential to the future existence of mankind.
This is coming from an agnostic with children by the way, I am sure that Christians will answer that Faith in God should come first, as will Muslims, etc........

No- but close to it. The most important thing to instill in ones child is love. Below that I would place accountability, responsibility, tolerance, acceptance...
Compassion is one of those things that they usually learn on their own, unless of course the parents are not themselves compassionate.

We're born with compassion.
Things we need to instill in our
children are old fashioned virtues,
such as truth, consideration of
others, overall good morals, self
discipline for study and work habits
and a keen faith in creation.
Above all, we need to encourage
our children to ask questions.
There is no greater threat to our
species, than the child who has no
question.

No, logic is FAR more important. Compassion is one thing but wasting it on those who are tugging at heartstrings in order to get to the pursestrings is an important lesson to learn.
And that's where logic comes in.
