I know Xanax is quite addictive, but I heard in lower doses it is not quite as extreme. Basically I have major panic and anxiety, and antidepressants aggravate it. The xanax seems to be working. I heard that using a lower dose (like 1 mg/day) and using the Xtended release kind (which gives you an even release all day with less ups and downs) is less likely to cause addiction. Is this true? Also, at this low dose and with the XL brand, am I less likely to develop a tolerance? I think this is something I will need to be on for years to function not just a few months, as anxiety has crippled me all my life. Over time will i develop a tolerance to the 1 mg XL and have to increase the amount or will the effect stay even? I was told at low doses like this, you don't develop a tolerance. Any answers are appreciated. Thanks

I think that any drugs which affect the nervous system are potentially addictive, whether or not they are in extended release form. I also believe that, yes, you will eventually develop a tolerance to just about any drug. It is good you are concerned about the potential of addiction, and I hope that this medicine can help you. I would strongly suggest speaking with a MD and not just us yahoo's on yahoo.

Xanax extended release is much less likely to cause addiction problems because you are getting an evenly distributed amount of the medication throughout a specified period of time. With the ER formula you are less likely to feel that "buzz" of one straight "acute" dose. However, most healthcare providers I have worked with (11 years of experience) will start with Xanax dosing at 0.25 mg per dose and work up. If you are taking 1 mg at a time there is surely a clinical need and it's good to find someone to talk to just to even help calm your nerves. 1 mg ER dosing sounds like an excellent start for you! The most important thing really is to know that you are not alone and these medications are created to help us. If need be, there are plenty of resources available. Maybe check nursing drug reference books at your local Barnes and Noble. Good luck.

The difference between addiction and legitimate medical use is the difference in the ensuing ability to function, the difference that it makes in the lifestyle of the use.

If any given drug improves your lifestyle, allow you to function, then it's being used legitimately. If it causes your lifestyle to circle the drain, it's addiction.

Further, tolerance is not the same thing as addiction. Think of tolerance in this manner. When you get up at night, and turn on the lights, it takes your eyes a moment to adjust to the different amount of light. The same is true when you then turn the light off. That adjustment is tolerance. Tolerance to any med is the very same process, but on a longer time scale. Tolerance to a med that requires an increased dosage, then is not addiction.

I have multiple types of arthritis, resulting in chronic pain. The same same thing applies with my meds, with the meds of any chronic pain patient, as apply in your case.
