My puppy is 10 months old, and he was very well potty trained and we had very few accidents in the house; he went outside and barked when he needed to go outside. However, recently, he has taken to using our dining room as his potty place and keeps going to the bathroom there. We have had four accidents there already in a span of a week. It's strange, because we let him outside to eliminate and a few minutes later, he goes again in our dining room, though he was outside just a few minutew ago. What may be the cause of this and what can we do to stop it?

He is neutered.

When you originally housetrained him, did you use a crate? If so, you'll probably have to start from there again. You'll need to reinforce the idea that the house is his 'den' and eliminating in the 'den' is not permitted. Also, if you have carpet in your dining room area, make sure you get some sort of odor eliminator from the pet store. It needs to be one with an enzymatic cleaner so the odors can be completely removed.

1. clean up the area in the dining room with an enzyme cleaner. there may be a scent still there indicating that he should go there again.

2. when you catch him in the act, say in sharp tone, NO and take him back out immediately.

3. if he keeps at it, take him to the vet for a physical. he may have a urinary tract infect. each pet shows us a different way when they are not 100%.

4. crate when not being supervised.

He may be marking his territory, especially if he hasn't been neutered. There are deodorizing solutions that you can use, but they aren't 100% effective. You will need to block off the dining room so he can't use it. Then see if he uses another area in the house--you may have to back to the first steps of housetraining if he does. Check with your vet to see if there are any physical problems, as well.

sometimes puppies will test their boundaries. If its cold outside, of course theyre going to want to go where its nice & warm & dry. Try this, my mom did it and it worked wonderfully:

Keep your puppy on a leash in your house! You can attach the leash to your belt/pants to go about your housework. Puppies need monitoring at all times, if hes attached to the hip, the chances of him doing bad in the house are slim to none. my mom kept our sheltie on a leash for about 4 months, training her to "come" when called (make them sit, since they cant go anywhere on the leash, lightly tug on the leash and they'll get the idea). It worked beautifully, i swear we have the best trained dog and all it cost was $10 for the leash. It takes patience & dedication, but Good Luck ! This is the best way to correct the problem since the pup will be supervised at all times but still have the freedom to walk around

If it's a urinating problem he may have a urinary tract infection. The infection will make him need to go more often.Sometimes he won't realize he's going. The only fix is meds from the vet. Let a vet have a look and see if this may be your guys problem. If it isn't,then you need to start the potty training from the beginning again.Good luck

Do not give him access to the dining room. Make sure you keep him out of there. Although he is only 10 months old, he may be "Marking" His territory. Is he neutered? If not please consider doing so. Not only will he not make puppies if he gets out, but his desire to run, and mark will be reduced. Get a good urine cleaner, and make sure he does not see you clean it.

You have to teach dogs inside and outside. The dining room is probably just a place where no one is most of the time so he can kind of "hide" when he goes. My advice, rub it in his nose and spank the **** out of him. Worked with all my dogs. I know that sounds mean but my dog is 11 months and he wouldn't dare go on the carpet.

sometimes pups will digress in training. just start back at square one....as in, start over with the potty training. Use a crate, and treat him as if he were an 8 week old again.

Is it cold where you are? When it's really cold my dog absolutely hates being outside. Either way, your puppy is not spending enough time outside when it's time to go. Take him outside regularly and only take him back in only after he has gone.
