"He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”

Jesus knew that He would have to go to the cross and die for the sins of mankind. Yet the human side of Him was crying to His father because His human side did not want to undergo all that. But being the Son of God, He said Let your will be done because He came to earth to do His father's will, not His own.

I quickly looked at the other answer and agree with them.

Jesus knew what was about to happen to Him (the physical and mental suffering), but I think that He also knew that He was going to be separated from the Father when He took our sins (when Jesus cried "Father why have you forsaken Me?") and this was an even bigger torment.

This was the night of His betrayal.....He also sweat blood at some point. He was experiencing the human side of torment on the night before His death. But thank God He went through with it for our sakes......

I would have been a little frightened as well knowing that I was about to endure a Roman crucifiction.....

It means he found it difficult to face knowing he would be scorned, mocked, tortured and killed but if that was what God wanted he would accept it. This passage proves Jesus was fully human. Can YOU imagine knowing all that before it happened and not running away from it?

Jesus accepts the path of suffering as his Father's will

He prayed for the Fathers will! God's will is our perfecct peace. John 10:10 says Christ came so we can have life and enjoy it in abundance. God's will is for us to present ourselves a living sacrifice for Him and He will always supply our needs (take care of us)!

Praise God!

he knows that soon he is going to die a brutal death, and he doesn't want to. He understands the importance of this death, but he is still hoping that there can be another way. but in the end he also understands that Gods plan is all encompassing and set for the best overall good of humanity.

Jesus was suffering on his way to his crucifixion. This passage was meant to show Jesus' humanity. He was praying for his suffering to end, but accepted that if his suffering was God's will, then he would accept it.

It is basically Jesus saying "God I don't want to die, but it appears as if that's where you want this thing to go, so go ahead and kill me."

I wonder why the bible doesn't mention Judas stating "I know I am going to be a pariah for all eternity for betraying Jesus, but someone has to, in order to fulfill prophesy, so thy will be done"
