it can be due to a valve in the esophagus that doesn't shut completely, or function properly thus letting stomach acid come up the throat.
see a Dr. and get a referral to a specialist in this area
I deal with it daily and take RX drugs to keep the acid from producing in the stomach

It could be from stress, I have done all of those things to help with my acid reflex, even had tonsils removed, but I can't seem to let go of stress, job related, lifestyle, whatever is causing the stress, I don't know. I think I was born with it, anyway I have been on Omeprazole for about 4 years now. It's a stronger dose that is prescribed to me by my Doctor. You can get it over the counter, prepcide,Zantac both are available at a lower dosage. Go to the doctor and get some that is a higher dosage and actually will work better for you. I hope this helps.

I'm a medical researcher. It is widely agreed among physicians and medical paraprofessionals, that initial diagnosis, mostly by using a typical acid reflux symptoms questionnaire, is necessary to ensure the most effective and quick treatment for this condition. Approx 70% of the acid reflux diagnostics that are based on the presence of typical symptoms are accurate. Since acid reflux, also called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), can cause patients a great deal of discomfort and result in severe complications, it is highly important to know how to identify its symptoms in order to quickly diagnose and treat it.
If you know you have acid reflux you can try this natural program http://acidreflux.toptips.org

unfortunately, i don't think there is a surgery for this. also, stress is a huge contributor to acid reflux - all the "healthy lifestyle" in the world doesn't mean much if you are highly stressed. if they are in constant pain, it has probably gone further than just acid reflux, and their esophagus has been damaged. prilosec (the purple pill) is a prescription medication that supposedly reduces the acid as well as helps to heal the esophagus. see your doctor right away, as there is a possibility it could be something even more serious.

It might be caused by a Hiatal hernia, it would cause the acids to come back up and burn your esophagaus. My mom has this problem, her acid reflux is something else! You can get a hiatal hernia fixed,my mom cannot because her body can't handle surgery, but if you are relatively healthy otherwise, I would contact my doc and see if this is the true problem. Good luck.

I also get it but not to the extreme where I can't function and live normally.
My diet is reasonable, I don't smoke or drink either.
Are they stressed about anything in particular as this is the only thing that tends to bring it on. You need to clear your mind and take a holiday and see if that helps before going for any medical treatment.
YES! Heard of that "purple pill" from a friend who swears by it.

Very, very much. My grandmother died a few months ago of emphysema, and my grandfather the same way. My mother was an alcoholic/ addict, and she got away from us as soon as she could to have her fun. I might have a drink now and then, but I won't smoke. Though, I did when I was younger (a phase) and have never done drugs. I have complete respect for people who do neither. Sometimes I'll see these kids who think it's cool, and rag on the kids who don't I want to just smack them and tell them to look at what that stuff has done to people.

Try http://www.webmd.com. I had the same thing and the dr put me on Omeprazole 20mg and I haven't had any trouble since ( it's been two years ). Taking out your tonsils wont help as mine are already out and I still had it. Good luck: Blueladybug
P.S. The Dr. did find a small hernia in my stomach but it didnt have to be removed.
