It could be a number of personality disorders. Im leaning towards a level of bipolar. We arent docs and shouldnt diagnose her. As a matter of fact don't tell her what you think she may have (can just mess her up more), convince her to see a doc, so he can diagnose her and put her on proper meds especially because she is physically harming herself.

Hi I am sorry your struggling with this friend and yes i think you may have hit the nail on the head with borderline personality disorder i suffer from it myself but have been stable for sometime now i suffer from other mental health problems as well. The hardest part in treating borderline personality disorder is getting the sufferer to accept her behaviour is due to the condition. It is not something to be ashamed of and cannot be helped it is hard to get the right support but once it has been found and an appropriate drug regime found the prognosis can be good. Prozac did not suit me it made m mood swings more pronounced so i would recommend she goes back to her dr and tried other things often anti psychotics are of benefit. there are infinite resources on the net and id rather not say which sites are better than others as it is unfair i am not a professional. the best advice i could give is for her to seek advice from a Dr and for her to learn to accept she may have a recognised problem

It doesn't sound to me as if she has Borderline Personality Disorder. My only experience with it was with a former boyfriend. But then I am not an expert and it would take an expert to speak with her and diagnose this.
Yes, you should recommend that she go and see someone. If she is cutting herself something is wrong. What i have heard about cutting is that it usually follows a severe trauma.
Tell her in a very caring way that you think a professional could help.
She is very lucky to have a caring friend like you.

One annoyance with reading about disorders, is you can apply them to everyone you know.
It could be BPD, it could be histrionic personality disorder, she could be bipolar.....there are a number of different things, and personality disorders in general are more rare then other disorders.
But bottom line is, no one on here can tell you what she has - and you can't jump to conclusions from reading things. There are soooooo many different factors that go into making a diagnosis, symptoms are just a part of it.

I have had some intense experiences with an ex friend with BPD. Have not time to expand now but you can email me and I would be happy to chat some more with you. Sounds like your friend might have it. It can be very difficult to deal with someone like this. fleurpsych@yahoo.com.au

don't think it's BPD.. sounds more like bipolar but i doubt it because bipoloar is not usually spurred on by a specific event like a death in the family. probably she is trying to cope w/what she is going through and will get better if she has a professional to talk to regularly. take her to a therapist.
