I think you have to read the whole passage to get the point. Paul is talking about showing favoritism to a point where its counterproductive for ministry.

In order to understand this one little section you must read the entire chapter. It is talking about accepting others in the congregation at church, meaning believers accepting other believers. Showing partiality is not being merciful, or gracious or loving as God is with us. If He has accepted someone into His Kingdom, then we should also. Jesus big command is that we are to love one another, and by doing so others may see that we are His followers and that God lives within us. However if we show partiality we are in fact disobedient to Christ in that He does not show partiality, so we are not practicing His command to love one another.

For a judge to show favoritism to one of the litigants in court is a perversion of justice and a sin. For a person to show partiality in their own dealings usually does not constitute sinful behavior...although one could probably come up with examples of it.

I wouldn't say its a sin, but its is bad. I had a teacher that showed favoritism...she ended up getting fired for that reason. So -your sins will find you out- I think thats a verse lol...you know what? i change my mind it is a sin!

Honesty.
Favoritism is lying. Stealing someone's reputation.
