Yup, sounds about right - makes about as much sense as the rest of it...

I am not sure where you got your "quotes" from Jesus about salt. I am a life-long Bible student and don't recall the ones you have stated. However, I can tell you about Matt 5:13-16 where Jesus is teaching His followers.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Just as a little salt has an influence on food, Christians are to have an influence on the people around us. Just as a light leads people to safety, Christians are supposed to be leading people out of the darkness of their sins. HOWEVER, if salt loses its flavor, what good is it? It might as well be trampled under food since it is good for nothing. This comparison is made for Christians. If we have lost our influence for good, what good are we -- what purpose do we serve?
Salt is an example most everyone can identifiy with and a great parallel given by Jesus.
Hope this answers your question.
Keep searching, keep asking questions. Think about it -- figure it out.

Yup, Sam's right. The fire refers to the Holy Spirit and the salt refers to your faith. If salt loses its saltiness it can't be made salty again, just like if you were to completely lose your faith.

Salt in the ancient world was not only used for flavour and preserving but also as a disinfectant.
Jesus was calling on His followers to bring flavour and cleansing into their world.
The fire refers to the presence of the Holy Spirit.

HE is speaking about your faith. Just as salt seasons food and makes it taste better, so your life will be enriched by your faith in him.
But if your faith loses it's fire (dedication) then how can you get it back? How will salt be made salty again? how can one who had faith and lost it get it back? That, I cannot answer.
Blessings,
Sam
