how can i make my backround black or any other color?

well i need to know how to make my backround black for a photo, and how can i put one of my pictures on the black backround,,,i tried it before and i messed up, because i didnt know how to cut and copy and paste the picture correctly,,,i kept doing it but the white lines got in the way and i couldnt cut and copy it right...if you any site that can help me with the editing for my pics can you tell me,,,,,i already know about photoshop....but which one do i have to download to get my images in good condition..what download would be good for photoshop..tell me wht site to go on..and what to do...please...thank you
