The only things I can find are spotlights, bathroom lights or really twee metal things with flowers. ARGHHH. The rest of the house is cosy, modern looking but I've just got bare bulbs!

They have the recessed lighting fixtures, which go up in the ceiling (bulb and all). Of course most of these are like spots, but not quite as glaring.
Then they have what's called "track lighting". It is a strip of lights that can be mounted flat against the ceiling, but you don't see the lights themselves because they are contained in the track fixture. It can go across the ceiling in the middle of the room or against the wall. It's more of a reflective lighting, but is very effective.
Finally, you may want to consider "sconces". They are the fixtures that go on the wall and the bulb is behind them. The light beams up the wall to the ceiling and illuminates a large portion of the area directly above and around the fixture itself.

Hope these ideas help!!!

Hi, I saw some really fantastic lampshades on www.pure3design.biz , they are handmade silk flowers, just so unusual, absolutely unique and not too expensive considering that each is unique. Certainly very different to all of the souless bright metal stuff around.

Go to your local light fixture store and tell them your situation. They have many catalogs with lots of different fixtures in addition to what they have on display. Alternative would be to look online for lighting fixtures. For example:

http://www.lampsplus.com/
http://www.lightinguniverse.com/

in particular maybe flush mount ceiling fixtures:

There are many other on-line light stores just google it.
