his birthday is the 21st but i dont know what to get him. he said he wants a hat but i don't know if i should get him that

CDs, DVDs, video games, baseball cap, are usually always good, safe choices, but you have to find out what types of things specifically he would like in those areas. Like what type of music he likes, what type of movies etc.
He might just be happy with a card and a happy birthday, since he might not even be expecting you to remember it's his birthday or care that it's his birthday since it's be a short while.
Also you could always go do something together as his present, like go to dinner, or to the movies, or bowling, etc. Presents like that are cool cause it also gives you a chance to spend time with the other person and that shows them that you have an interest in spending time with them.

Think outside the box. Try getting him something both of you can enjoy together.. or something you know he'll enjoy more out of. It's his bithrday, be creative. Dress up in an unexpecting outfit. Get him a gift he had mentioned awhile ago of something he had always wanted. Or.. get him a hat. Just be creative and think of the pros and cons

For a 17 year old I would get him a gift card at one of those go-cart places, not the kiddie ones but the more adult ones that go fast, my 24 year old husband loves to do that with his buddies.

if he asked for a hat and it is a specific kind he really wants, why not get what he obviously really wants. You could also bake him a cake and get him a cute card.

Get a shopping magazine and ask him to circle things that he likes. Works for all ages.

get him something over the top. which man doesn't like power tools. get him one of those power tool kits from sears, or you just buy him the hat with something else. or just take him out to dinner
