Do you have any idea how many brands of golf clubs there are? Asking for a list of this nature is not only subjective, it's also close to impossible. Is there something specific that you are looking for from this list?

Titleist and Taylormade are the two most respected by golf professionals. Cleveland is close behind and still the leader in wedges. Titleist Scotty Cameron is by far the leader in putters with Ping and Odyssey(Callaway) close behind.
Just a little note to the person who said Cobra is least respected with no spokesman or history. They currently have the US Open Winner on staff along with Ian Poulter, etc. Big names, and tons of respect from industry professionals. They are a Acushnet brand (own titleist, footjoy and pinnacle) and are essentially Titelist version of game improvement/oversized/offset clubs
Nike has a great R and D department especially with Tiger and all, and is only getting better
Callaway is game improvement for the most part as is Cobra.
Ping is big in the women and college arena. Again mostly high end game cavity back clubs
Least respected is a tough call but Bazooka and Bang, etc those that usually don't adhere to the rules, etc.

Ping is probably the best brand in golf and the most respected. Their clubs are easy to hit and they do make a line for better players. Titliest is a highly respected brand, geared more toward the better player in mind. The most common clubs are undoubtly Callaway and Taylor Made, easy to hit models and huge sweetspots make them a favorite of high handicaps. Mizuno makes great products for lower handicapers. As of for least respected most any top brands offer great clubs. I would especially avoid the nock of clubs that many component companies sell or box store clubs like Dunlop or Hippo. If you are looking for an affordable club, you can't go wrong with Power bilt or Tour Edge.

The best thing to do is to go to Golfsmith and Golf Galaxy's web site (see below) to look at clubs and get an idea for prices. Good brands include Nike, Callaway, Cobra, Adams, Ping and others. I would recommend either Cobra or Adams, they are very high quality but tend to be a bit less expensive. They are also very forgiving clubs for beginning golfers. You can also get an idea as to how much to spend on a golf bag, don't skimp here. Then, get him a gift card for either Golf Galaxy or Golfsmith so that he can go there and be fitted for his clubs and be able to do a hands-on comparison of bags.

this is totally subject to opinion...there are many brands of golf clubs and equipment...but the one brand I have seen most all of the top rated players play at least early in their careers is Titleist...just about every major player you can name played those clubs at one time or another...they are still the ball of choice by more professionals on tour than all the others put together (being an Auschnet brand they also are part of Foot Joy shoes and gloves, and Cobra clubs) Titleist and Callaway had the most driver wins last year followed by Nike (half of which were Tigers) and amazingly as many people that play Taylor Made drivers on tour there were few wins for that brand of driver...as for the least respected there are many many golf brands for various clubs and equipment and no statistic is kept for that which I am aware of...

The Darrell Survey is an excellent source to determine what the best players in the world put in play week-in and week-out on the PGA Tour. The DS literally looks into the bags of every player on the first tee at every tour event and lists what they play. This will definetly give you lots of evidence as to what are the "most respected" golf club brands. You can subscribe to the survey results at DarrellSurvey.com

Most respected: Titleist or Callaway
Least respected: Cobra
I'm basing this solely on major brands. Cobra offers lots of great products, but doesn't have the respect/spokesmans/history as some of the other major brands.

A question like this is too wide open. Something like this is based on opinion only and what I may like in a particular club you may not.
Also, a lot of brands are considered better at particular items (drivers and woods opposed to wedges and irons) You may want to narrow the question to one or the other.
Just a suggestion, good luck.

MOST RESPECTED ON TOUR
Drivers = Callaway & TaylorMade
Fairway Woods = Callaway, Cobra, Nike & TaylorMade
Irons = Mizuno, Nike & Titleist
Putters = Cameron (I would guess 90% of tour players use this)
Balls = Nike One (Black / Platinum) and Titleist Pro V1(x)
