Of the 33 responses to my question, "If we put our trust in God, why bother with a police department", 9 people responded with some variation of, "to protect us from those who don't trust in God".

Christians are about 75% of the population, and they occupy approximately 75% of the prison population.

Atheists are 10-14% of the population and only comprise 0.209% of the prison population.

Who's protected against who here? Have you ever heard of an atheist terrorist or an atheist suicide bomber? They don't exist. Atheists have no silly myth telling them to kill non-believers (christianity and islam both do). Atheist countries have by far the lowest rates of crime, murder, rape, violence, stds, abortion, and divorce. America is unusually religious and unusually dysfunctional as a result.

Not to mention the founding fathers weren't christian and many of them were openly critical of christianity. Things like the 1st freedom of religion amendment were put there intentionally to protect people FROM christians and to prevent christian policy from interfering with government (they would be appalled and gravely insulted by the US today).

Um...no. Not everyone in this world has that little thing called a moral compass. It has nothing to do with religion or God, it has to do with doing things that are wrong & harmful to others. The police are there for that reason. The presence or lack of presence of God has nothing to do with crime. Some people are just criminals and don't obey the law.

By the way, I worked in a lovely prison for a few years. Most of the prisoners weren't Christians. In fact, only a handful were. Most believed in God but didn't have any specific religion whatsoever. They do ask this question when inmates arrive in prison so I'm not making up that little factoid.

That's odd... I just chose a best answer to a question of mine that basically asked "would you be a good person even if God didn't tell you to be?"

Most people said "I'm not going to answer because if God wasn't around, no one would be around", but a few people said "of course people would still be good; we have an innate sense of right and wrong".

Of course... those people also attributed that sense to God, saying he "put the knowledge" in all of us, but regardless it was asserted that we'd still be a good bunch WITHOUT recognizing a god.

And now you show me these results... and I was so close to being convinced that believers don't assume the worst of nonbelievers.

Statistically this makes no sense. Atheists represent a far smaller portion of the prison population than theists do (and yes, I'm talking about the ratio of total number of atheists to imprisoned atheists). We are less likely to commit crimes.

Now watch all the people say: "those Christians in jail aren't TRUE Christians" and "those Christians converted AFTER they went to jail."

Even though God created everything....including the ordination of the institutions of marriage, the state, and the church......

....there still has to be some semblence of order and law. Therefore the police exist to protect everyone equally......including atheists.

you have to take into consideration the fact that there are a lot of people who claim to be christian who really are not and several who are not, who claim to be just to make christians look bad. It is fairly easy to weed out the fakes. Just watch the way they live.
