I like my treats very gooey and marshmallowy, so I don't use the standard recipe. What I do:
Melt at least half a stick of butter (or about 4 tablespoons) in a larger saucepan, stirring it around so it gets up the sides of the pot. You can use margarine if you prefer, and you could even use vegetable oil if you're in a pinch. (If you do use oil, don't heat it very much, because it will start to spatter. Just pop the marshmallows in, coat them and let them melt.)
Pour in a whole bag of miniature marshmallows. The mini marshies melt more uniformly than the large ones, and you may also choose to leave some less-melted for a marshmallow-studded effect. (I don't do that.)
Stir the marshmallows and butter over low-medium heat until they are melted into a thick sauce of buttermallow.
Pour in 3 to 4 cups of rice crispies.
Stir, ideally with a silicone cooking utensil, because the marshmallow is going to stick to whatever you use. Stir a lot, taking care not to crush the crispies too much.
When the whole concoction is gooey and covered with marshmallow, take a taste. If it's too marshmallowy for you, add a bit more cereal. At this point you can also add chocolate chips or any other addition you like.
When you have everything mixed and set the way you want it, you can pour and press the mixture into an lightly buttered 8 x 8 pan, or whatever pan you have on hand. If you only have a bunch of bowls, you can press it into a bunch of bowls. The more you press when you are setting them up, the more dense they'll be. I don't like mine very dense. Let them set until cool.
You can even shape the treats and place them on a cookie sheet to set. If you do this, you can make little shapes and decorate them with frosting after they set, if you choose. At a baby shower, we once had little rice crispy treat "babies" wearing little blue frosting shorts or little pink frosting shirts. You can also make balls similar to old-fashioned popcorn balls, and they cool, wrap them in cellophane and ribbon.
But that's the fancy route. The great thing about rice crispy treats is that they're so easy to make and you really don't need any special equipment. If it's just you and a friend, you can even eat them while they're still warm and melty. :)

Peanut butter does not melt and hold together the crispies like marsh mallow. I do have another recipe that does taste a bit like that though and it used peanut butter. Crunchy Fudge 1/2 C. light corn syrup 1 6oz. package butterscotch morsels 1/2 C. peanut butter 4 C. Rice Krispies Melt butterscotch morsels, peanut butter, and syrup in saucepan, stirring until. blended. Add Rice Krispies. Press into a buttered 8" pan. Chill. If you want to really be decadent then make a topping for it. In a double boiler: 1 6oz. package semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/2 C. sifted confectioners sugar, 2 Tbs. butter, 1 Tbs. water. Stir until melted and blended. Spread over chilled mixture. Yummy!
