She's actually my uncle's dog... I believe she's close to eight years old. She chews her leg raw and it appears to be infected. How do we get her to stop?!

I've heard that aloe vera is a good fix because it tastes bad... Is this true?

TAKE HER TO THE VET. They'll do a skin scrape for infections and give you meds you need and soothing ointments. If you don't take her to the vet now the infection could spread and then you'll HAVE to take her to the vet with huge vet bills later on.

All dogs do that! My dog does it all the time. If it really worries or bothers you then you then get the aloe vera. It will work, but make sure you keep putting it on, because if you don't it'll just wear away and the dog will chew again. But don't freak, I think a lot of dogs do it. - If it still looks infected, bring her to a vet. You should actually bring her to a vet before you try anything. It could get really bad.

You do need to consider a good vet for a diagnosis of the problem; it sounds like a "hot spot", where the dog continuously chews on one spot on his body, usually a leg or part of the body he can reach easily! Not sure of the exact cause...seems to affect sporting breeds a lot! Could be nerves, boredom, dry skin, fleas, a number of things. best to get a diagnosis & have it treated properly. It's not life threatening but it can cause secondary infections ,& be quite painful for the dog....but is easily cured with proper medication. I do tend to think it's past the Aloe Vera stage....

It's best to have a vet take a look at her leg. Could be that she started chewing on her leg because she's developed arthritis in the leg. That's what happened with our Lab when she got older. If she's already to the point of it being raw and infected, then definitely have a profession look at it. If the infection goes untreated, she could end up losing her leg or her life.

she is probably chewing cause her leg is irritating her and they have those neck pieces that you can get for situations like this. i am an assistant to a vet and so i am able to learn this stuff on the way. but it also depends on how bad she is doing this and if her skin is being irritated. keep a close watch on how much she is doing it i wouldn't put aloe vera on it because some dogs skins are very sensitive and are not like our skin. so i would try calling a vet and taking her in.

Probably needs some kind of antibiotic ointment if she doesn't lick it off. It's not the taste of something that will matter to her. It is irritating her because it feels bad if she doesn't chew on it. Sometimes dogs need oral antibiotics to help their skin. He needs to make sure she doesn't have fleas first.

Usually a dog needs to go to a vet when the sore has gone this far. There are many skin diseases a dog can get and some can be very serious. Sometimes it is allergies or nerves.

Your dog may have developed a FLEA ALLERGY. A dog allergic to fleas is not allergic to the fleas themselves but to the FLEA SALIVA. A single bite can irritate a dog for YEARS. Try Hartz brand oatmeal shampoo and sprinkle for food with brewer's yeast twice a week to cut down on the itching. An Elizabethan style anti-chew collar may keep her from chewing the area, but it may also drive her crazy because she can't. When all else fails, CONSULT A VET!

Put an ecollar(sp?) on the dog until the wound heals. While the ecollar is on treat the dogs wounds. There is a natural spray called bitter apple and it keeps dogs from chewing, but I don't know if it works on their body. Go to your local Petco or Petsmart and ask what they recommend, a lot of times they are pretty knowledgeable.

One of my dogs is a Hybrid (wolf, husky mix) she is like she is obsessive compulsive disorder sometimes. She goes straight for her leg. I did take her to the vet. I had been keeping neosporin on it so it wasn't infected. Now when she start chewing we put cortisone cream. neosporin and Vick's vapo rub on the top she hates the smell and taste. This also will not hurt her if she gets it in her mouth.
