There's the small matter that humans have followed differing versions of "God" since Day One and look where we're at in our history.
The fact is at best, God is a spiritual construct, one that has nothing to do with the creation of anything. Police are the best thing we have going and we don't have enough of them.
(This coming from someone who has 29 moving violations to his credit from the 80's. All are paid.)

Answer with a question; Do we all believe in God? We trust the Police Department because it is a source to go to when we need emergency help. You say if we put trust in God, why bother with..[End there]. Why ask just a police department? Why not ask, why do we bother with relationships, negotiating, cutting a blue wire over the red. We put trust in God to give us the confidence we need to succeed in life. Those who do not believe in God gain there confidence through another source depending on their religion. God gives us strength. Police Departments give us help. You can not always trust God when you leave your door unlocked. God is a personal experience, and it will not always be in everyone. This is why we have Police. To protect us from those who feel that the world does not need rules or laws, to help us when our child is lost, to serve us when the need to check a suspicious noise downstairs arises. We need both in order to have a confident life. To have strength given to us from God and protection given to us by the Police.

The police and God are two separate things. One has nothing to do with the other.
The police is a man made organization designed to uphold order and protect the innocent.
God is our Holy Father and Creator. Without God, you, I or the police would not exist. Through God all things are possible, but without God nothing is possible.

This is a super question. I think it was Meckan that said when people say they need god what they really mean is that they need the police. or words to that effect. In The God Delusion he quotes it after mention a police strike where people start looting and robing banks as soon as the police go on strike. God didn't keep them moral.

Because not every one puts their trust in God. For those idiots, we need the police department so that they can come over when needed and be a tangible authority with the power to crack the criminals in the head with a billy club.

The police department is for those that don't believe in God.
Christians believe in fairness; forgiveness.
And they don't believe in stealing; foul play.
There is no need to police good Christians, but we certainly rely on & appreciate the great work the Police do to protect us from non-Christian acts.

Excellent question!
Unfortunately, not everyone believes in God. Some that do, sometimes forget that they do and fall short of God's expectations.
So, for those that fall short...there is the police. Hopefully, more people will find peace in God and we will need less police to keep us from falling.

I put my trust in God.
I defend my home (hopfully will never come to this) with a Smith and Wesson.
The police will be needed to clean up the mess.

That's like asking if you put your trust in medicine, why bother with a doctor. You're making an inordinate leap of logic.
