I know, I know. It sounds awful, but put a teaspoon of salt in a cup of hot (not scalding!) water, and gargle with it, then spit it out.

It sounds like you may have strep throat, Go to the doctor and get some antibiotics. The salt suggestions *can* help temporarily but it mainly works if the soreness is caused by junk in your throat because it helps to break it up. There is also a numbing spray you can get at the drugstore which can help. It's called Chloraseptic. Here's a link:
http://www.chloraseptic.com/
They also have lozenges.

If it is not specifically cold related ...
Muscles can have knots (trigger points) that make them tight which in turn put pressure on nerves and other things causing pain.
Molasses - a couple of swigs or Bananas 1 or 2 - both contain magnesium and potassium for muscles.
Try working with the principles taught in The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
I use a chiropractor and massage therapist with it

You are catching a viral infection. Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. You can find some good home remedies at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

sounds digusting, but when i was little my mom would make me gargle salt and water. DO NOT SWALLOW....it works but only for like an hour or two. the salt mixed with the water clears the rough thing in your throat that hurts it.

If you have a Halls or Ricola or something like that, try that. If you don't and you have some salt, gargle some salt water. And of course try a Tylenol after you eat something. You'll probably have to redo that every few hours or so, but it should provide some relief. Maybe liquids will help soothe too.
Hope you feel better!

Gargle with vinegar. It tastes pretty bad, but it works wonders on the throat.

If you have the money you can buy throat lozenges. also take garlic. as much as you can. It kills infection. They say gargling crushed aspirin helps. But I have never tried that one.
