You can get the right cleaning solution from the vet. Then pour a little bit on to a cotton ball and gently clean their ears.

My dogs LOVE to have their ears cleaned- it's gotta feel great! I take a clean, soft terry washcloth rinsed with warm water. I gently "scrub" the inner ear using only my finger to get into the creases. The texture of the terrycloth cleans them thoroughly. If you feel your dog's ears are especially dirty, use only mild Ivory Soap, making sure to wipe the soap out. If your dog itches his ears frequently, massage a little hydro-cortisone cream inside the ears. NEVER use a Q-tip - they may actually injure the ear. If you use this method, your dog will come running every time you get out a washcloth!

dip a q-tip in witch hazel (a natural toner that dissolves oils) and then gently swab THE OUTER AREA of the ear. don't go inside the canal or anything (i'm sure you know that, just thought i'd cover my bases) and finish by swabbing with the other end of the q-tip (the dry end) so no liquid gets into the canal.
i do this with my dog weekly, or whenever it looks like he's trying to rub his ears. he loves it!
you should avoid getting water in dog's ears as it causes irritation that can lead to infection.
good luck! i hope your pup stay happy and healthy
