Here's the scenario: I'm lost and want to go to Yahoo maps with my cell phone. My plan includes 2mb and $.03/kb after that. How many kb's am I going to download to look up a map? Is there a way of finding out from home which use the least amount? I feel like my grandparents who can't set their own VCR clock!

Yes, all you have to do is go to the website, click "File" and then "Properties". It will tell you the size.

I am unable to get Yahoo maps to display on my phone; I believe they are only meant for computers. Driving directions, however, are available and I'm averaging about 25kb per set of cross-country directions.

Google offers a mapping utility for Windows Mobile phones and PDAs; it is approximately 30kb per map per zoom level (i.e., every time you zoom in or change positions it downloads another 30kb) but it also has a cache that stores recently viewed maps to save you some $$$ on your data charges. When you go to http://www.google.com/gmm on your phone you can download it automatically, but it's a 607kb download. Otherwise you can download it to your PC and install across a sync cable.
