Canon Squeal

The squeal is a common problem in the AE-1 and A1 lines and is caused by a lack of lubrication in the shutter mechanism (namely the gears).

The best way is to send the camera to a knowledgeable Canon repairman for what is commonly called a "CLA" (cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment).

A good technician will clean the entire shutter assembly (along with the entire camera), re-lubricate the assemblies (with the proper lube), clean it and recalibrate the shutter speed.

Most places will do this for under $100 and it can take 2-4 weeks.

I don't recommend that you try any "home remedies" that you may find on the internet unless you are very comfortable working on intricate mechanical things -AND- willing to risk doing more damage.

I had a CLA done on my Pentax ME Super (for $75) and the camera came back in fantastic shape. If you want to keep your AE1 running I highly recommend it.

An easy place to find folks that do CLA's is on eBay (believe it or not), but be sure you find someone with good feedback and a strong warrantee policy.

If you're not comfortable going the eBay route a quick Yahoo! or Google search on "Canon CLA" will turn up a number of vendors.

Good luck and keep shooting!
