I checked our local library's website for story hour. They had a weekly program all winter long that ends March 2nd. I may take her to the last one, at 9:00a.m.; however, I work until 1:00 the night before so we'll see. I also checked our Health and Wellness Center for play groups. All that they have is sports activities for kids starting at age 5. I'm hoping to find something for kids her age to interact as well as their Mommy's. I'm also looking for low-cost or free ideas preferably in the afternoon after her nap due to my work schedule. Any suggestions?

We don't have a zoo or museum nearby. We live in a town of 22,000 and there's not much here other than shopping and restaurants. Last summer we lived at the park. We will do that again, of course, but I am looking for other ideas.

That is a very good age to start socializing your child to other children and people. Check your local preschool center or school. They offer some great parent networking programs. We have what is called the Birth to Three program that organizes play groups, mothers day out and other educational programs. They have special fridays that they take the little ones on a field trip to a local attraction that is age appropriate.
Also check your local churches, many offer similar moms and babies groups. There is also a nationwide program called The Parent Place, Look for it in the phone book. They offer great resources for parents with younger children.
I encourage you to keep looking and call around. If your area is lacking in these types of programs start your own Mom and baby group with some other mothers and do things alternately at each others house.

Call your local community center and YMCA, which are the most likely to have "Mommy and Me" and "Mom and Tots" programs, like swimming, gymboree, etc. You can also call the PR departments of your local hospitals for info on Mom and Tot groups (lots of them are formed by the hospitals for the moms who go through Lamaze there and deliver there). I also find many large park districts have great programs for moms and tots, especially at the field houses that have indoor pools or gymnasiums. The other great idea is to check out churches in your area to see not only what they offer themselves, but what they are aware of in the area. No one is better tapped into low-cost and free programs than are the churches. Lastly, I don't know if you have a Cooperative Extension office in your county, but they are WONDERFUL places to find fun programs that you can get something out of without overextending yourself. I've taken cooking, knitting and quilting classes there through the years and loved every second of it. They even give out the greatest coupons for free things that are really useful, like a full set of pots and pans from a very expensive store...all donated to them to get people interested in cooking.

Look for mothers in similar situation to start your own play group. At 19months you dont' have to amuse the child more than once or twice a month. Just let the kid be a baby and just play with whatever toys it has, its more time to develop motor skills than social skills that is more for next year.

Have you checked the programs at your local YMCA? They usually have activities for moms and their babies and preschoolers. I worked at the Y for a number of years and we offered classes such as kindergym, and baby and mom swim classes. Lots of fun for both moms and kids.

Since it looks like you are contacting all the appropriate places why not try a popular park? I am sure you will find other women with toddlers.
