While not "wrong" it is certainly impolite to speak in another language in the work environment, for the simple reason that others can't understand what you're saying. If I moved to a foreign country to live and work, I'd adopt the language and customs as a form of respect and use my original language only at home or with friends.

I don't think it is wrong to speak other languages at work as long as, when you are with a customer, or other employees that don't speak that language, you speak English. It is rude to speak another language around others who don't understand you!
Now, which person was fired? The person who said "Speak English" or the person who was speaking Spanish. Either way, it was not right! If this woman could not speak Spanish she may have felt invaded or uncomfortable. Speaking the language of the country you are living in is a strength of character, not a weakness! It shows others that you respect yourself as well as the people around you! This goes for all languages in all countries! If you are working in that country it is more appropriate to speak the language of 'That' country while working then to speak your own language. While on break or while speaking with someone from your own country who does not speak English is appropriate but only if..you are in ear shot of another employee who doesn't speak it.. you are able to translate what is being said!
Like I said, the strength a person has having the ability to speak both languages, is unlimited.

It's wrong if the majority of the people there speak English. It's also rude if everyone else is speaking English. It's only appropriate in a Spanish speaking workplace.

I agree. Anyone can speak whatever language he likes everywhere. Otherwise we would be talking about a kind of fascism. Talking in another language can be considered rude under certain circustances, but a person should also have the right to not care if he will be considered rude. We are all judged by our behaviour at the end whether we like it or not-but we still have the choice to try to be liked or not.

No, it's perfectly fine to speak another language than English at work. At school, I always speak Spanish and French, sometimes more often than English. Some idiots tell me to shut up and speak English cuz this is America, but I just tell them to shut up and I can speak whatever language I want and it's none of their business and I wasn't even talking to them anyway so turn around and mind their own business.

Was your friend latino? If so, the remark that the lady made was firm and just cause for discrimination. Although most people (not employers, but coworkers) prefer that you speak in our native tongue, it is not wrong for someone to speak in theirs, whether it is spanish, italian, french or anything else. Your boss was only taking action against a case of harassment when he fired the lady.

the help in the save in many cases speaks English (properly they communicate it poorly, whether it is nonetheless English). while you're asking an worker for help in a save, communicate english. learn that the numbers displayed on the check in is what you owe on your purchases. learn which you're able to undergo in strategies your guy or woman PIN kind for the cardboard you're utilising (the cashier won't be in a position to bypass that area for you). The numbers in English seem the comparable for many distinctive languages. Up until eventually you're keen to pay $50 for a can of soup, do no longer anticipate the save's workers to speak distinctive languages. That stated, it is totally properly to speak to a minimum of one yet another in a save in yet another language. in basic terms comprehend that the staff in all threat in easy terms communicate English.

I think that whatever people speak at work is their own business. I work in retail, and I use Spanish, German, and French with native speakers who come through my line. If anyone has a problem with it, puede besar mi culo.:)

no. It was right thing to do. Your friend has all the rights he/she wants in the office except all the negative things. Your friend could've got fired if you sat there drinking your coffee.
