insurance on the car...liability, but would it cover it if someone else wrecked it? Is it also ok for me to ask them to leave their drivers license with me while they test drive it so that I know they will be coming back? Sorry, I have never sold a car before and I just don't want to get messed around. Thanks

Ever notice that most places won't allow you to test drive without getting a copy of your insurance card and driver's license first?

There's a reason for that.

I'd suggest that if you're selling a vehicle and a person would like to test drive it, get a copy of both pieces of info before you allow them to drive. That way, should something happen, you can contact their insurance company.

Also, draft a document for the potential driver to sign so that they are aware of their reasonable responsibilities should there be an accident. Also make sure to get a copy of the driver's license or at least the number. You can't keep their license while they drive. Most laws state that the license has to be in the person's posession while they drive.

If they refuse to sign, no skin off your nose. Just wait for the next buyer who will.

This is why people trade vehicles at a much lower amount than selling them privately. It is illegal for the customer to drive the car without his license. It is scary for you to go with a total stranger. An attorney friend of mine had a high line vehicle stolen this way and was mugged yet another time.

When you advertise, you advertise to the world...good and bad.

Your insurance covers a test drive of a licensed driver, so I would at least ask to look at the license and them write down all information including drivers number.

No, you should ride with them when they test drive it. Anyone can go spend 10 dollars to get a new drivers license made. They can also show you proof of insurance on themselves. Your liability will not cover another driver unless they are on the policy. If they have full coverage on their car more than likely it will cover them test driving yours. Call your insurance company to make sure.

In CA, the insurance stays with the car, so anyone who drives it will be covered (as long as you gave them permission).

You should definately go along on the test drive. If you're scared, then ask a male friend or family to go along instead.

Don't take away their license as they may get stopped for speeding or something and your car impounded for driving w/o a license. You can ask to see it and maybe even copy it but they may not like that and leave.

I believe insurance will cover other drivers as long as they have a license and do not reside in your home address but best to confirm with insurance company 1st. Also, I'd ask for some other form of collateral as they shouldn't be operating without a license in their possession. Better yet, go with them on the test drive or have a brother or boyfriend go with them. Good Luck!

Normally you would go with them on the test drive to answer any questions they might have & just in case of an accident. If you have a 3 in 1 PC printer you can always make a photo copy of their drivers license just to not jam them up if a cop pulled them over during their test drive. You could just always trade your car in if selling your own car is too much pressure for you but you won't get as much money if you do that.

Make sure they have a license. Holding their license wouldn't do you a bit of good, since they could claim they had lost it or had it stolen and get a new one issued.

Yes, your insurance will cover anyone driving your vehicle with your permission, but if they run into a tree and you don't have collision coverage, you'd be out of luck.
