how are poodles so associated with France, if they originated in Germany? also how did poodles get the reputation of being lazy "pillows"? i mean in all the shows, the poodles are mean, and superficial, such as that movie, with the orange cat, called "Oliver and Company" when they are NOT like that!! i would know bcuz i have a poodle. when we went to adopt her from the breeder, she and all of her family members were running FAST around the yard, and playing fetch, and comin' and lickin us!! me and my brother were surprised at the time bcuz of the reputation we thought they had. how come poodles got this reputation instead of like.............. dalmations or something??? we still have our now 6yr. old poodle, and she is the most wonderful dog ever.
what's your view on this situation, and why are poodles known as being like this when they're NOT??

I believe the reasons poodles got that reputation are

1) the poodle show clip - because the ordinary person doesn't understand the reasons behind it, so they think the dog looks silly

2) the majority of people who own poodles, at least the toys and miniatures, treat them like babies instead of dogs.

A poodle owned by a real dog person can be really smart and fun - I've seen a toy poodle win high score in trial at an obedience competition at a dog show. So, it's mostly the people who own them, not the dogs themselves.

I think the french thing came about because poodles are so pretty when they have a poodle cut and the french are known for fashion. The poodle got a reputation of being a fashionable dog....take it as a compliment that you have one of the most fashionable dogs out there......as for being lazy pillows i think that came about form people that have never owned them and they see toy poodles with older people that baby them and assume that older people have quiet lap dogs. I think that this will change slowly though.....more and more poodles are doing aggility courses.

I think they became associated with France because they were a popular breed in that country. The French also adjusted the dog's appearance during breeding to create the dog that we now know.

I don't know about lazy, but I am sure many people think of them as spoiled and haughty, especially Standard Poodles. That certainly is not the case! Just goes to show - don't pay attention to what the media has to say about a breed , get to know them yourself.

I have a toy poodle and he's the best dog ever. He has a great temperment and is full of energy. I'm not sure why they are associated with France. I guess they are always portrayed as "snobby" because they are pretty high maintenance (grooming).
