A chicken can refer to either sex (or to the complete dinner on your table!). Females are referred to as pullets or hens, males are referred to as roosters or cockerels. Same with many other livestock - there are different names for them referring to the same thing. for instance pigs referrs to all swine but females can also be called sows or gilts. It just depends on the terminology you prefer.

Hi!!!!!
Not that I live on a farm or anything but as I have hens I thought I could help. I know that a chicken is just basically all of them, (just like we're all people). Hens are the females, only they lay eggs, but I'm not sure about Roosters and Cockerels. I should because 1 of my hens thinks she's male, crows every morning and has stopped laying. We don't call her Mabel anymore, we call her Moses!
