Hummingbirds winter in Mexico or Central America. Please disregard the statement about them riding on the back of geese. This is a totally false old wives tale. Geese do not even migrate to the same places as hummingbirds. I have seen hummingbirds during migration flying over the Gulf of Mexico. Believe me, they can do it.
Sometimes you will get a bird in winter, usually a Rufous, a western species that can show up any where in the United States. They are really cool birds. Enjoy!

The hummingbirds in the eastern US go south, feeding up as best they can for energy because they have a long flight across the Gulf of Mexico to Mexico where they winter.

Each hummingbird species has its own migration strategy, They were (and largely still are) tropical birds, but as the great ice sheets retreated from North America, they gradually expanded their ranges to exploit rich temperate food resources and nesting space, filling unoccupied niches in the U.S and southern Canada while evading intense competition in the tropics
Most Ruby-throated Hummingbirds winter between southern Mexico and northern Panama

Some migrate south for the winter, the sedentary populations(Population of birds that stay and don't migrate) begin to build nests and mate during early winter. Our wildlife organization just received the first 2 babies last Friday. They will have babies from end of Jan./beginng of Feb. and go until end of summer. I feel bad for the mama's they are the soul caregivers of the babies the Dad's mate with several females and do nothing beyond that.

They migrate to warmer climates just like most other birds. Although hummingbirds do not look capable of long distance flights, they actually fly great distances to winter in warmer locations.

Have you ever taken a really close look at geese flying south for the winter? Using binoculars, focus on the goose's back ... the hummingbirds hitch a ride on a goose's back!!
So just kiddin' ... some consider this rumor to be true, but it's not. :)

Hummingbirds fly south to well.. .south america and warmer areas. Since they are nectar eaters, they have to find a place that has tubular flowers.
