Valtrex. Yes, it works on cold sores as well. You have to get the script from the doctor. I recently got a new dosage, 2 grams, twice a day for five days. As soon as you feel that tingle and you start the treatment right away, there will almost be nothing there to see or feel! It is wonderful! Well worth the doctor visit. To treat topically, the best thing I have found is a vapor rub. Sounds strange, but is very soothing and will keep it from cracking. When I used Abreva, it bled and I still have a scar, so I would stay away from that. Good luck.

I REALLY wanted you to know that you can EASILY never have to deal with another horrible, awful, nasty cold-sore for the rest of your life!!

I got them every winter my whole life until 3 years ago (I'm 36 now) and they were the BANE of my existence...the whole process took weeks to heal and would leave a scar for at least 2 months sometimes!

I was reading a message board on www.curezone.org and discovered the PERFECT remedy for both healing them and preventing them completely:
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT

So, I buy the liquid tincture by "HerbPharm" and it has not failed me ONCE...Whenever I'm feeling drained, tired, stressed, or get that tingly feeling on my lip, I just load up on this stuff.

This is the one I buy:

You can also get Olive Leaf at Whole Foods Market, and other natural food stores.

Very cheap.

The first time I tried it, I was actually halfway into a major eruption and I drank a bunch of the extract in some water.
AS I WAS DRINKING the stuff down, I could feel the swelling on my lip shrinking...I was in such shock--I ran to the mirror--it was shrinking before my eyes and within ten minutes my lip had returned to NORMAL...I began kissing the bottle of Olive Leaf...yeah, I really did!!

I had tried everything in the past...I can't begin to tell you what I went through...and it's now been 3 YEARS since I've had one!

I've been in the Alternative Medicine field for some time now, and offer individualized consultations:

Certainly talking to your doctor about a precriptive treatment is a great option. otherwise, I use a topical chap-stick like product called Herpecin-L that works well when I think I'm getting an outbreak, as well as a product called abreva that works really well (and is a bit cheaper than prescriptions). Otherwise, don't pick at them, take L-Lyseine tablets, and apply soaked tea bags (black tea) to ease the discomfort. Hope you feel better!

If you apply cider vinegar to the cold sore with a cotton ball, it will clear up quickly. Stings something fierce, but it'll go away.

i had bad cold sores since i was like 6, and one day it just became annoying and bad and i was buying stuff from cvs and cheap stuff to try to make it go away, and they didn't work. so i just went to the doctor and i got magical medicine, it went away so fast in like 3 days and usually mine lasted about 2 weeks, and also depends on how much you put it on but its amazing, its called Zovirax, so definitely ask you doctor about it.

I get them when I get stressed out. I use a Q-tip and apply hydrogen proxide and then apply milk of magnesia. It really worked and went away a lot faster. Apply a few times a day and don't swallow the proxide.

Zicam Oral Mist. It will dry anything out. Works everytime for me. Great for zits also. Do not spray, just put a dab on every now and then.
