I think it's so annoying! Whenever people think that something is ridiculous, they often call it "retarded". When they think that something is uncool, they say that it's so "gay". Not only does it sound foolish, but it's also insulting to both the developmentally disabled and the homosexuals.

lack of vocabulary and intelligence, these people don't know how retarded or gay people feel, and they use these words as a bad word, to hurt some body's feeling, but actually, they don't mean anything but a lack of vocabulary and intelligence, a lot of ignorance.
I ask the same question to myself when I see or hear some people talking like that..they should get some books and start learning new words and their meaning.

I certainly agree with you that the use of "retarded" and "gay" are annoying used in these ways. However, probably almost every generation in history has abused a few words in their language in a similar fashion. When I was in high school in the latter 1960's, "spastic" and "loaded" were abused in much the same way with 'spastic' referring to anyone who was clumsy, geeky looking or just plain "uncool" rather than someone who had spastic paralysis, and 'loaded' meaning "very drunk" e.g. "There was a beer-bash down at the beach and Rick got loaded. You should have seen him!" To some extent, the use of these words is a sign of either ignorance, immaturity, bad breeding or all three. Yet, fortunately, these kinds of words are ephemeral and get old fast. Their average survival rate seems to be two to five years.

It's unfortunate...but people use the terms "retarded" and "gay" because they can't express themselves clearly.
Also these words are used to dismiss ideas or concepts. Young people feel it's very importaint to make clear what rules, ideas, and concepts they agree with and which they don't. Some young people seem to spend the greater part of day declaring that they feel is "retarded" or "gay".

Lack of intelligence...most people use a simple word because it take to much work to find a synonym or the right word that means what they want to say.
I was in a play in high school call our Hearts were Young and Gay. We had to keep telling people it meant happy, joyful.

when people use gay and retarded in that sense they dont think"oh, im calling this video game homosexual, and im calling your outfit a handicapped person" the words are just slang for stupid or dumb. over the years, the words have taken on diffferent meanings, and really dont have any relation to each other depending on the context. just like gay-happy and gay-homosexual.

people like to abuse retard and gay because the are not mature and also because they are not one of them but if they were a retard or gay they will know not to abuse those words

It has become a figure of speech. Kind of like "oh my god" or "dammit". 50 years ago people used those literally but now it's a figure of speech.

Because they are ignorant and are lacking in the vocabulary department. I would just correct them "Who are you kidding, gay is cooler than you are." but thats just me.

Because they have very low self-esteem so they need to pick on other people to make themselves feel better.
