You are, undoubtfully, trying to translate, word by word, the phrase : riding horses or horse riding into french!
Riding horses would be like: faire de l'equitation.
Riding a horse would be like: Etre (je suis) 'a cheval.
Now, monter a' un cheval means to get to ride a horse.
Monter a' des chevaux means nothing; it isn't real french!
You'd rather say "faire de l'equitation", which means one does
horse riding, using various horses.-
