Yup, cats obsess on their own favorite makeshift toys. Mine freaks out over twist-ties.

Did someone own the cat before you? Having a type dog that can get obsessive (Border Collie), the behavior is usually a result of something that happened before. Border Collie's will stare at a "doggie," or "cat," door for hours - because a cat walked through it once.
Did someone play with the cat using a straw before? Did they, perhaps, make the noise a straw makes when going in and out of the plastic lids - making the cat a bit crazy?
Since straws are relatively harmless, you can either have fun using this as a toy (with supervision), or prove to the cat that a straw, by itself, isn't prey. :^)

We once had a cat like that - in the summer, it was really hard to remember to not leave a straw in a drink unattended...

My cat does that 2. She's done that since she was a kitten. It's not that abnormal because my bffl's kitten soes that 2. If u want it 2stop, i guess you'll hav to abolish every straw in your home.

I have one who loves toothpicks - he climbs across the desk and pulls them out of the holder one by one.
His brother used to have a thing about red elastic bands but now he attacks feet instead.
Another one bites pieces off cardboard boxes - she doesn't eat them, she spits them out and bites more.
Cats are strange creatures
