Justbe POSITIVE the hairdresser knows exactly what you want. Tell her you DEFINITELY do NOT want more than a centimeter cut off and she should know what you mean... Show her with your fingers the length you want cut off... just be precise... I'm sure the hairdresser isn't retarded.

Go somewhere that has a good reputation where you will have to pay a little extra. I pay around $50 just to get my hair trimmed now, only because their reputation is better. Just be very specific and let them know that you want only that much cut off. Just definitely don't go to their hair dresser!

I know how u feel.I don't even WANT to think about all the times that's happened to me.What I suggest is that u must be very,i mean VERY,strict with ur hair dresser.Say something like this,"I want a half centimeter cut off AT MOST.If my hair is too short,I will never come here again." They should listen to you after that.(;

well what i would do is just get about half an inch. cuz that would get all the dead ends or split ends(if you have any)off and then you could start growing it out again.and just do that every time u need a haircut. Hope it Works good luk

Sweetie, stop going to salons to get your hair cut. Any Longhair will tell you this.

The trick is called 'dusting.' You seek out only the split or broken hairs and cut off only the damaged part. While it takes a big longer than getting an inch whacked off the bottom---only 'trimming' the bottom of your hair won't remove the rest of the damage.
Unfortunately, my favorite longhair site TLHS was discontinued after 10 years.

Here is the trimming article:
Trimming the hair is key to keeping it looking healthy. To get the maximum length out of your growth cycle, you should only trim the hairs that are split. Of those hairs that are split you only need to trim the length of the hair that is split. This allows you to keep as much length as possible. Which in-turn will allow you to reach your desired length, in a faster time period.
If your hair is long enough, there is no reason why you cannot trim your hair yourself. If not, then find someone who you can trust to do it for you. Your husband, friend, relative or boyfriend. It does not matter as long as they appreciate your desire to have long healthy looking hair. So find a comfy spot that allows full access to your hair, and pore yourself a cup of tea, coffee , or a glass of wine, and relax. Make the best of it, there's no reason why it cannot be considered quality time. It makes a great opportunity to catch-up on things.

Trimming your hair using the blunt-cut method is fast and easy, but it does remove much more hair than necessary. For those of you who want to grow your hair out as fast as possible, stick to the trimming techniques below. As bluntcutting will add months or years to the time it takes your hair to reach your desired length. Blunt cuts are more for maintaining a certain length or style, as it’s look has a unique, and tantalizing effect. See our short section on bluntcuts. Once you have grown your hair out to a desired length, you can either choose the bluntcut or natural look, which usually makes a V shape at the ends of your hair. It all depends on you, and the style, or image you wish to protrude. Both styles are lovely.

Please make sure to read the instructions through at least twice before you begin your first trim. Make sure that you understand all of the instructions. If you are not clear on anything, please let TILHC know, and we will be happy to clarify any questions for you. Even if you or your partner have never cut hair before, if you follow the directions as is, you should have no problems at all. Just make sure that you do understand all of the instructions first.

Well finally the trimming instructions.

I realize there are several methods to approach split ends. This is one that works well, and is easy to perform. The first attempt on hair not treated will require a great deal of time and patients. With a periodic regime much less time is required to maintain splits depending on your frequency.

Equipment: Very sharp 1 1/2" to 2" hair cutting scissors, or very sharp small sewing scissors. 1 to 2 large hairclips. Coated elastics or small hair clips for hair waist length or longer. Very bright light.

Create a center part. Starting at your preference left or right front gather a 1/4" of strands of hair making a section. Begin twisting the section at about 2 to 3 inches from the scalp. Continue to move down the length of the section as you continue to twist. When you have twisted the strand tight enough you will notice that split ends will be protruding out along the length of the section. Carefully trim the split ends off being sure to trim just above (1/4") where the split actually is. When you feel you have trimmed all that is visible, unravel the section and begin twisting in the opposite direction until once again tight enough to expose the remaining splits. Very long hair twist tight half way down the section secure at the point with a small elastic coated clip. (The elastic coat prevents damage to your hair.) Trim out the splits, then twist the lower half below the elastic clip. Continue moving toward the back taking 1/4" sections each time. Use a clip to keep the completed sections separate.

Splits commonly occur when the hair is stretch or stressed beyond its limit during combing or brushing. Especially vulnerable is wet hair. Always de-tangle from the ends up using your fingers as much as possible and don't pull and tug. To see more about brushing long hair go to our brushing section. The average spilt measures anywhere from 1/8" to 1/2" and can be damaged up to 2 inches and more. Untreated splits can travel further up the hair shaft if left unattended.

Tell the hairdresser that you want a TRIM, & explain that you want more NO more than so much off. A good stylest will provide you want you want.
