If I had answered this a few years ago, the answer would have been, "no." However, since my best friend got a chihuahua, I've changed my opinion. Here are some observations:

1. My cat is twice the size of my best friend's full-grown chihuahua (I'll call him BB here).
2. BB is pretty hyper.
3. If BB doesn't know who you are, he does yap.

However . . .

4. BB is extremely attentive to his "mom."
5. He's very intelligent, and therefore trainable (the key here is that he's WELL-trained)
6. And there's this thing about folks with chihuahuas not getting sick as often, which, for my friend, is almost a life-saver.

Chihuahua's are time-consuming and need lots of attention, but if you are able to spend that time and are consistent in your training, you can have an incredibly entertaining and lovable pet.

And interestingly, after visiting with a police officer friend, I have learned that they are excellent security dogs! The annoying yapping is the very thing that deters the bad guys during attempted break-ins, according to the officer. And when in "protection mode," they can latch onto a bad guy's ankle with quite a ferocious bite. He even got one for his daughter, who carries it around in her purse!

I did until about a month ago when a dog that looked like an over grown Chihuahua bit my foot! I do have a 6 year old Chihuahua/poodle and he doesn't act anything like a Chihuahua. Thank God.

I adore them, but prefer the long haired chihuahua. The one I own is 4 years old. She is quiet, well tempered unless poked at by my kids and very loyal. They are very family oriented also. I don't recommend them for small children unless they are raised with kids. Also, I've noticed that the long haired ones seem to be more relaxed than the short haired. They are timid, they shake alot, but once you've earned their trust you have a friend for life!

NO! If you turn them upside down and put them on their heads, they would be perfect little footballs with built-in tees. (Just kidding).

They yap too much and look like rats, not dogs. Anything smaller than a Cocker Spaniel should not qualify as a dog.

Seriously, I had a friend that was almost killed by a little Taco Bell spokescreature. He was riding his bike in a bike lane beside a busy street. A Chihuahua started chasing him from behind a fence. He felt safe since it was fenced in, but then the fence just ended and it jumped at him, nipping at his heels, and almost into his spokes. In trying to avoid it, he lost control and almost went into traffic. Got some nice road rash, but he was okay in the end.

I LOVE CHIHUAHUAS!! It took me 6 years to get one and I love him so much! Yes, alot of people dont like their yappy little barks and big ears but they can hear a pin drop and are such excellent guard dogs-by that i mean barking to let you know somethings there. They are loyal to their one special person-once you've earned his trust he is yours forever. A dog is only as bad as his owners teaching. I dont think there is any bad breed whether it be pitbull, rottweiller, doberman, etc. It is the bad owners that cause bad dogs period!

I love dogs no matter what, but Chihuahuas are not really my type of dog, I have 1 female labrador and 2 German Sheperds. I would care for a Chihuahua but i wouldn't own one if i didn't have to. I feel like I would have to protect it rather than it protecting me.

I love them. I have one and he is 3 months old and already properly trained. They are great dogs. Some people just have superficial opinions about them. Ask anyone, If you have one you will almost always want another.
