There was a strong belief that Iraq was harboring weapons of mass destruction. A great deal of intelligence was gathered and distributed to both the administration and members of Congress. After reviewing the information a decision was made to set a time line for Saddam to allow inspectors complete access to his facilities. He refused and prepared his forces for war and called the U.S. Military to his door step. If he wasn't harboring weapons, why refuse to allow the U.N. to come and take a look... Americans felt very strongly that he must be hiding something if he wasn't willing to let the world body take a look.
I am amazed each time I watch the liberals and the media recount the reasons... their version goes... Bush said there were weapons of mass destruction and then without warning he committed out "Children" to war... However in actuality there were over 300 resolutions put forth by the U.N. over a ten year period, all of them ignored and publicly denounced by Saddam.. 10 years of resolutions ignored... America was screaming for blood over 9/11 and in polls taken during the time, 80 to 90 percent of Americans approved of going in. The same numbers in Congress apply. However today, someone is lying and claiming they never supported the war (Hmmmm... imagine that, wishy washy thinking)
Now remember, blaming Bush for the flawed intelligence is a rather new thing, it lets the opposition wash their hands, but he read the same reports they read, he didn't write it and no proof has ever been laid out saying he did, just accusations that people take for granted, because an extremely biased media tells them what to think.
Nevertheless, we are there now, and just like the only other war this country had that was a disaster, we are freaking out, questioning our troops, questioning our leadership and screaming PEACE not WAR. It is undermining the effort and emboldening the terrorists, they liked Clinton better, he would wait a month and toss a missile at an abandoned training camp. With all of the great Clinton policies that are being remembered by the media today, explain to me how his policies worked, Embassies were bombed, the Cole was attacked and OH yeah... 9/11 happened, but since we took a strong arm approach to terrorism we have been living safe within our borders...
Oh and one more thing... Lets stop calling our troops "Our poor deceived Children" They are well trained, heavily armed, well supported and part of the best Military in the world, with three of my own children serving, one in Iraq, a brother that has 20 years in the Air Force, a Father that retired from the Army, a Mother that served in the Navy, oh and my own service in the Army and now with the Air Force I can tell you that much good is being done in Iraq, but you will always believe what you want and never look ant further than a media created reality if that is your desire.
Bring the troops home, but not until the mission is complete, bringing that home immediately will be the biggest war crime ever committed by a nation, when the insurgency takes over and begins the systematic murder of every Iraqi that believed in Democracy and freedom, I hope you sleep well at night knowing that you wanted our troops home so bad, that the lives of other, non-trained Iraqi civilians didn't matter to you.
Let's hear more about Oil... Yeah and everyone in America cries when gas is $3.00 a gallon, yet they still motor around in the big SUV "Because they can afford it" What about the working poor, give up one, drill Alaska or attack oil nations... We have to have oil and either start walking to save oil or shut up!
If you don't believe the real reason there is a big hubabulub going on about the war in Iraq is about getting another political party in control, then just tell me what the plan is that the Lib's have to solve the terror problem. They won't lay out a specific plan of thier own, they just condemn and cause issues to arise. I hope the Lib's gain control, and begin serious diplomatic efforts with extreme groups of terrorists, yeah we can all relax then and sleep well knowing Bin Lauden gave his word to Hillary... LOL WAKE UP AMERICA... Because you are going to die sleeping when the nuclear terrorists show up, they aren't going to leave us alone because we keep our Military inside our borders... They hate our lifestyle... They don't like open homosexuality, they don't like free sex, they don't like us giving our children condoms to protect them, they hate promiscuous TV programming, they hate our free and open lifestyle.... It is their religion, and their belief in God that drives the behavior... Oh yeah and in this country, we are letting the Lib's run God out of everything, and we must believe they will keep us safe from religion driven terrorists... LOL

There were many reasons but the one that everyone likes to remember is the WMD's.
Over the course of 15 years, Saddam broke every agreement in the signed peace accord after the Gulf War. He stole money from the UN (Oil for Food scandal). He harbored known terrorists in Baghdad and allowed, in Northern Iraq, an Al-Qaida camp. Many will dispute that he allowed it, but if he didn't want it there, he could have easily destroyed it. He continued to shoot at Coalition Aircraft patrolling the No-Fly Zone which was against the accord as well.
It wasn't all about WMD's although that was a concern and a threat. Those weapons are still out there, somewhere. We lost control of them when we took Baghdad.
If you need further proof, you should see the palaces that Saddam built with the Oil for Food money while his people starved and the infrastructure crumbled. He killed children who couldn't get medicines all th while blaming the US for the sanctions.
This guy was a menace, not only to society, but to his own people. They know that, too.

We didn't start the Iraq conflict as has been said, but we are going to finish it. The war had already started with terrorist attacks on the US. (remember 9/11?) Iraq was a supporter of terrorist activities against the United States. President Bush did not lie, WMD's were found in Iraq, over 500 were found. WMD's doesn't mean only nuclear, but Biological and Chemical also.

Saddam Hussein as a terrorist. Terrorist defined as those who targets civilians for mass murder.
President Clinton 1998 on regime change in Iraq: The Iraq Liberation Act http://www.library.cornell.edu/colldev/mideast/libera.htm
17 UNSC BINDING Resolutions against Saddam's Iraq ignored by Saddam over 13 years.
9-11 attacks
There ya go. It was time someone did something about terrorism. President Bush formed an international coalition to do what needed doing in Iraq.

petrol, petrol, petrol.america,or bush, was felt that saddam,as strong as he was(even if he was unfair to his people, that's inner politics),and owing such amount of petrol, represented a real threat.so he decided to do his best to get rid of him and his powerful system.
if u r speaking about 9-11,see how many innocent people died,i really felt so sad when that happened, coz people died without having any hand in what the destruction was an answer to.but, see also how many die in palestine, and america is supporting israel.why dont we feel the same about every person in this small world,no matter what the religion, the nationality or the color was?why don't we love each other and try to realy help each other instead of wars?why don't we learn from all what we loose?why not live in peace?i wonder...God bless us all and help us find a way out.amen.

30 + years of radical muslim attacks all over the place. 9/11 was the last straw! We needed to do something in response!!!! Doing nothing wasn't getting us anywhere and while Carter, Reagan, Bush 1(didn't stay long enough) and Clinton didn't want to get into major conflicts, Bush (2) at least is trying to do something. Granted, I don't agree with how the war is being handled.

Here's what the US government said:
It claimed that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, which are potentially a threat to the USA. It also claimed that Saddam had links with Al Qaeda. Remember, Al Qaeda were the terrorist organization responsible for 9/11.
However, both the claims made by the US government were false. That was the rhetoric.
The US government wanted oil. So, they went there, removed Saddam to favor themselves. That's the reality.
George Bush Senior regretted the fact that he didn't remove Saddam from power during the Gulf War when Kuwait was invaded by Iraq. So his son, George W. Bush, finished daddy's job.
